Vocal meaning [edit]

The song is about a man who is torn betwixt two women that he loves: i being his significant other and the other being his mistress. This is credible when Doc Zhivago is referenced in the 2nd verse of the song. In the end, the human being chooses to say cheerio to his mistress considering it is only fair to his significant other, who has always trusted him. This becomes articulate in the first poetry of the song when he says, "I've got somewhere else to be, promises to continue/Someone else who loves me and trusts me fast asleep." However, as he is saying goodbye to the mistress, he has to hide his true feelings (honey) from her; hence, the championship of the song: "The Hardest Thing". Every bit he says goodbye to his mistress, he thinks, "It'south the hardest affair I'll e'er have to do to look you in the eye and tell you I don't honey you." Yet, he knows that their love is real and that they will (hopefully) encounter again when the fourth dimension is correct: "I know that we'll meet again/Fate has a place and time/And so you tin can go on with your life."[ citation needed ]
